Many types of products that have to be manufactured and supported for long periods of time lack control over critical portions of their supply chain, e.g., avionics and space, telecom infrastructure, and industrial controls. As a result, the components and technologies that these products depend on become obsolete long before the product’s field life and sometimes manufacturing life ends. No technology typifies this problem more than electronic parts. Obsolescence (also known as DMSMS) management, which is an inevitability for these products, must be considered during product design, and when planning and managing for life cycle sustainment.

This talk addresses forecasting obsolescence, optimizing the reactive mitigation of obsolescence, and strategic planning methods targeted at minimizing future obsolescence impact and maximizing cost avoidance. Business cases associated with strategic DMSMS management will be presented.

March 26 - A Technical Discussion on Advanced Techniques in SEM Nanoprobing: EBAC, Kelvin, and EBIC

SEM nanoprobing has become a widely used technique to locate and characterize non-visual fails. The process and results have been well documented over the past few years. However, there are advanced techniques that expand the usefulness of nanoprobing outside of simple non-visual fail characterization. Electron Beam Absorbed Current (EBAC) combines the imaging capability of a SEM and the characterization capability of a nanoprober to find breaks and some shorts in metal lines. Kelvin probing yields more data on metal line characteristics and also provides a method for resistance free transistor characterization. Electron Beam Induced Current (EBIC), a cousin of EBAC, helps locate and diagnose problems with dopant quality and PN junctions. Presented here are case studies and examples of these techniques.

Title : XIVA Laser Based FA Techniques and Thermal Imaging
Presenter: Mr. John McDonald
Brief Abstract: The presentation will cover laser based scanning optical
microscopy (SOM) techniques such as TIVA and LIVA. Also covered will be
thermal imaging techniques for global isolation

Bio:. Mr. John McDonald is an infrared physicist currently associated with
Quantum Focus Instruments. John has designed and fielded various optical
instruments since 1981. Early on his career he designed night vision
equipment for helicopters and armored vehicles as well as commercial
thermal-infrared cameras. Since 1996 John has designed and fielded fault
isolation microscopes for semiconductor failure analysis. Quantum Focus
Instruments (QFI) makes EMMI, infrared hot spot and Laser (XIVA) based
fault isolation microscopes.
